Cavernomas A Randomised Effectiveness (CARE) Study Update

We’re pleased to announce that the CARE Study is almost ready to open to recruitment! We will be opening our first recruitment centre in July.

Details of the CARE Study have just been added to our website, and other information can be found on the Edinburgh Clinical Trial Unit (ECTU) website.  These provide information about the study and about taking part.

Answering the uncertainty about whether treatment without surgery or treatment including surgery is best for cavernoma is a top priority in cavernoma research. The CARE study aims to recruit 60 patients in the next 17 months who will be assigned to receive either treatment without surgery or treatment including surgery (neurosurgical excision or stereotactic radiosurgery).

Taking part in this study will help us to:

  • Work out if it will be possible to determine whether treatment without surgery or treatment including surgery is best in a larger study in the future
  • Design future studies with patients, carers and families at the forefront
  • Improve how cavernoma treatment research is discussed with patients

More information will be published in the coming months as site opening set-up progresses.

This study is funded by the National Institute for Health Research – Health technology Assessment programme (NIHR128694). The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.
